Magazines
First and foremost,
you must get Editor & Publisher,
a U.S. general interest weekly magazine on
the newspaper industry, with a skew toward covering journalism.
They venture into global coverage, but their focus is the United States and Canada.
E&P is the best, quickest read to stay updated on newspapers.
Beyond E&P, it's a world of niches and spin-offs:
- NAA
publishes Presstime, a monthly, feature-oriented magazine on the U.S.
newspaper business.
- Another good niche
product is News Inc., a U.S. newsletter with some penetrating insights
and sometimes irreverent points of view on newspapers.
- While you might think
PANPA's monthly
PANPA Bulletin is strictly South Pacific, you might give it a try, as there
are always nuggets of information that are applicable anywhere.
- In the
United Kingdom, The Newspaper Society's
Headlines publication has the
most in-depth coverage of developments both among U.K. newspapers, but
regional newspapers in general.
- IFRA publishes the monthly Techniques magazine,
with technical/operational content that is quite good.
- In the private sector, AdWeek,
MediaWeek, and
Advertising Age provide
good overviews of the advertising industry, but there is not enough coverage
of newspapers.
- INMA publishes Ideas Magazine, a monthly
collection of newspaper marketing case studies and strategic cover story.
- A regional press association in the United States, the
Inland Daily
Press Association, publishes a bi-weekly tabloid newspaper called,
"The Inlander," which is a good snapshot of what small-
to mid-size Midwestern newspapers are doing.
