The UK's Manchester Evening News is drawing attention from other regional newspapers after it became the first to release a combined print and online audience report. The print figure includes both its free and paid distribution, which together make Manchester Evening News the UK's most read regional newspaper.

In his final days as managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, Paul E. Steiger says the overall quality of journalism has declined as newspapers have cut back in the face of declining revenues and increased pressure from competing media. But, like others in the industry, his crystal ball is hazy when it comes to the future.
